If you don’t like ads intruding your email experience, we would advice you steer clear of this story. During a routine APK teardown of the Gmail app, the folks at Android Police found a piece of code that hints at a possible existence of ads in the forthcoming versions of the app.
The teardown revealed an entirely new library called ‘Ads’ <“com/google/android/gm/ads/”>. Inside are messages and functions all titled ads and a particular function also takes the user to his or her Google account’s Ads settings page. What is not clear though is how Google plans to display these ads. They could either show as banners or pop-ups like in other apps or could be sent to users via a sponsored email in the Promotions folder.
If you think about it, the concept of ads on Google’s most popular app is a no-brainer. We only hope these ads aren’t as intrusive as some of the ones we have seen on other apps.
