AIR starts SMS news-alert service across India

All India Radio has finally initiated an SMS-based news alert service to send news headlines of the day to basic feature phone users across India, PTI reports. Those interested can subscribe the service by either sending an SMS with ‘AIRNEWS their name’ or by giving a miss call to 08082080820.

As being reported earlier, the SMS alert will carry a couple of news headlines along with a small message on the public utility schemes by the government, which will help the News Services Division of AIR generate revenues and take care of the cost incurred to start this service. A public service message from the HRD Ministry will be sent along with the news headlines of the day.

Reportedly, AIR started running the service in pilot mode about six months back, and received about two lakh subscriptions. Now the service is expected to gain another 3 lakh subscribers to reach a total of five lakh subscribers by the end of this month.

Considering AIR can access information from the most remote parts of the country, this service will help in mainstreaming events taking place in northeast and others remote parts as well, Manish Tiwari, information and broadcasting minister said.
