Despite Nokia buy, Microsoft reportedly ‘keeping an eye on BlackBerry’

Could Microsoft bail out two struggling smartphone companies? Unnamed sources tell Bloomberg that despite agreeing to pay $7.2 billion this week to buy Nokia’s handset division, Microsoft is still “keeping an eye on BlackBerry” as a potential acquisition target down the line. In particular, Bloomberg’s sources say that BlackBerry’s “strong presence in the enterprise market could still attract interest from Microsoft,” especially since Microsoft has already been making moves into BlackBerry’s enterprise mobility territory. Any merger between the two companies would almost certainly mean the death of BlackBerry as a brand, however, since Microsoft has already said that any new smartphones it produces in the future won’t carry the Nokia brand.
